Synopsis: |
This is the first published edition of the "Speculum Speculationum", written by the eminent English man of letters, Alexander Nequam (1157-1217). Essentially a collection of theological lecture notes, this "Summa" was written in the early 1200s, when Alexander was in retirement as a comon of Cirencester. It incorported reminiscences of his lecturing in the Schools of Oxford in the 1190s, and is thus one of the earliest records of academic teaching there. His extensive range of arguments and authorities represented the state of the art in philosophical and theological debate in western Europe at this time. |
