Synopsis: |
This edition offers the "Life" as Roger North finally conceived of it. Assessment of North's place in the history of life-writing based on the evidence of the 1742 version has misrepresented and, Mary Chan claims, underestimated North's achievement. This edition aims to allow a new assessment of North and his work. Early in the 18th century, North worked out a "new" form of biographical writing, significant despite its having been largely unknown, requiring us to readjust our "history". North's work can be seen itself as a mirror of contemporary concerns with historiography and draws attention particularly to late 17th-century notions of historical truth and its presentation. |
