Synopsis: |
Raised in the workhouse, the orphaned Oliver runs away and encounters the Artful Dodger in the streets of London. He then falls in with Fagin's gang of thieves, but does his best to resist a life of crime. Although Oliver finds temporary rescue in the benevolent Mr. Brownlow, there are many more trials to come... While the harsh realism of the novel attracted criticism when it was published, Dickens was unapologetic, the truth contained in Oliver Twist, he maintained, 'needed to be told'. |
