Description: |
With nearly eighty pairs of images, this volume traces the history of Scarborough, which served as a commercial port and shipbuilding centre. It explores transport, work and leisure pursuits and also provides information on the Promenade Pier in the North Bay, the cottage in which Anne Bronte died, and the site of the Holbeck Hall Hotel. |
Synopsis: |
Scarborough has changed greatly from the days when staid Victorian ladies and gentlemen sought the benefits of spa waters and a quick dip in the ocean from a bathing machine. Today's visitors have altogether different expectations and, in true form, Scarborough continues to cater for their ever-changing needs. With nearly eighty pairs of images, this fascinating volume takes the reader on a nostalgic trip back to a time when Scarborough served as a commercial port and shipbuilding centre and the herring fishing trade thrived. Though much of the town has changed or evolved over the years, there are many parts of the town that are now gone forever but preserved here for nostalgia. They include the Promenade Pier in the North Bay, Scarborough's well-loved aquarium, the cottage in which Anne Bronte died, demolished to make way for the building of the Grand Hotel, and the site of the Holbeck Hall Hotel before it slid slowly into the sea in 1993 as the cliffs gave way. Transport, work and leisure pursuits are all explored in detail. This book will provide much enjoyment for both residents and visitors alike. |
