Culturally Competent Counseling and Psychotherapy is a core text for courses on multicultural counseling and practice. The text is intended to aid students in applying the theoretical concepts learned in class to their own lives and translate it into meaningful practice for clients. The author begins with an introduction to the text and workbook, and then breaks the book into three key parts. The first part focuses on orienting the students to the text, the core constructs of culturally competent practice, self assessment, and ethical and professional issues. The second part focuses on specific population groups, including African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Arab Americans, European Americans, and Other diverse groups, including, those with disabilities, gender and age, and social class. The third part focuses on evidence based models of therapy, and presents five chapters of application to various theoretical approaches. The book is unique in its focus on application. It uses a self-assessment approach of having students apply the concepts to their own experience and lives, and in so doing promotes a deeper level of understanding. Building on the self assessment activities, the author then will help students learn how to apply these concepts to clients in practice from various ethnic and racial backgrounds. Through the use of a skills building workbook, this text focuses on practical application and comprehension of the concepts introduced.
