This book discusses Darwinian medicine, examing the ecological and evolutionary roots of disease. For example, viewing diabetes through our knowledge of ecology and evolutionary biology provides a fresh understanding of this complicated disease. |
Synopsis: |
Darwinian medicine looks at the ecological and evolutionary roots of disease. Looking at diabetes through our knowledge of ecology and evolutionary biology provides a fresh and thorough understanding of this complicated disease. More than just an academic exercise, it explains problems that biomedical researchers have been unable to solve and new approaches for treating disease. A typical problem with biomedical research today is excessive specialization. Research is revealing more and more details and subtleties of gene expression, protein interactions, cell signaling and every other aspect of metabolic regulation. However, these studies have been done by isolated groups of researchers specialized in their own narrow fields. A beta cell researcher is most often unaware of the role of insulin in memory and thinking. A researcher focusing on cell signaling in glucose uptake does not think of the role of insulin receptor in sexual desire. We seriously lack a theory as to why a single molecule such as insulin is involved in functions as varied as fat accumulation, cognitive brain activities and ovulation. What is badly needed is a synthesis that explains the diversity of processes in a coherent manner and the best platform on which such a synthesis can be attempted is ecology and evolutionary biology. This is because what shaped these pathways and mechanisms is the process of evolutionary selection to face ecological challenges over a very long time. |
