Synopsis: |
The joint USAID/World Resources Institute (WRI) Information Working Group for Africa have released GIS: Supporting Environmental Planning and Management in West Africa (also available in French). The report of three West African countries concludes that benefits can be gained from the use of modern information technologies in environmental planning and in managing natural resources. Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, and The Gambia have used modern information technologies since their introduction in the late 1980s. This is the first time that the use of these technologies, collectively called Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has been documented and compared. Despite all the problems of incorporating these new technologies, the study notes that GIS has successfully helped to identify and guide action on a number of environmental planning and management issues. This synthesis report is available in French and English editions. The 13 case studies and both edition synthesis report are available on WRI Website and from www.eisafrica.org. |
