Synopsis: |
In 1513, a Spanish conquistador named Juan Ponce de Leon discovered the coastline of a land unexplored by Europeans. He named this wild new land Florida. Ponce vowed to explore and settle Florida, but died in the attempt. During the next several decades, other Spanish soldiers would search for gold and glory in Florida and the southwestern region of what today is the United States. Men like Panfilo de Narvaez and Hernando de Soto paid for their failed attempts with their lives. It would not be until 1565, when St. Augustine was founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles, that the Spanish would establish a foothold in Florida. |
