Description: A facsimile, 50th Anniversary reprint of the Programme and Notes for the International Writers' Conference - "The Novel Today" - at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1962. A fascinating snapshot of international writing and writers at the birth of literary festivals.
Synopsis: In August 1962, twenty years before its Book Festival came into being, the Edinburgh International Festival hosted a truly innovative and International Writers' Conference, open to an audience of festival visitors and the wider public. Organised by John Calder, Sonia Brownell and James Haynes, on the theme of 'The Novel Today', the gathering attracted both eminent and emerging writers for sessions and discussions planned by Malcom Muggeridge as the Artistic Producer. It was an exciting experiment, and no mean feat, inspired by a hope that 'The more that ideas and books are free to travel across national boundaries, the better the place will be to live in.' To Andrew Hook fell the role of Editor of the Programme, combining articles which introduce and give context to the five days and themes - contrasts of approach; scottish writing today; commitment; censorship; the novel and the future - with biographical notes, and advertising from Publishers, Booksellers, a Brewery and a Bank . It is his book that is reprinted here in a Limited, Numbered Facsimile - signed by Andrew Hook - on the 50th Anniversary of its first publication.
