Description: |
Trade unionists, environmentalists, agrarian activists, landless peasants, street children and other poor or marginalised groups can be vulnerable to human rights abuses, particularly when they take a stand for their rights. This report shows that it is vital for international human rights standards to be incorporated into trade agreements. |
Synopsis: |
Across the world, people are persecuted or exploited because of their race, religion, sex, national or social origin, birth or economic status. Often they are targeted for campaigning against economic exploitation or social injustice in the workplace. Trade unionists, environmentalists, agrarian activists, landless peasants, street children and other poor or marginalised groups can be specially vulnerable to human rights abuses, particularly when they take a stand for their rights. The failure of the World Trade Organisation talks in Seattle in December 1999 highlighted growing public disquiet about the effects of globalisation and its effects on human rights. |
