Synopsis: |
Sir Herbert Gibson (born in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, 1863; died in Buenos Aires, 1934) was the outstanding member of a Scottish dynasty with a long record of involvement in Argentina. A man of considerable intelligence and vision, he became an influential figure in both his native and adopted homelands. He possessed an unrivalled knowledge of Argentina's rural industries, as well as a deep affection for all aspects of her culture, and wrote and lectured frequently on the country's history, politics and economics. Sir Herbert was prominent in forging ever-closer ties between Britain and Argentina, giving exemplary service to both nations throughout his adult life and winning the respect and friendship of many in the process. He moved in the highest circles and his opinions were valued by those in positions of authority on both sides of the Atlantic, including several Argentine presidents and the Prince of Wales. Knighted in 1919 in recognition of his services during the Great War, he was awarded a baronetcy in 1931 for his role in organising a major British export exhibition in Buenos Aires.'Don Heriberto, Knight of the Argentine' draws on a variety of sources to construct an intimate account of Sir Herbert's remarkable existence. Of particular importance are the extensive diaries, of not inconsiderable literary quality, that he kept throughout his life, which offer compelling insights into his private and public activities as well as the forces that shaped Argentina during this period. |
