Synopsis: |
In the Green Paper "The Governance of Britain (Cm. 7170)" (ISBN 0101717024) the Government set out proposals for radical constitutional reform. This included a commitment to reforming the role of the Attorney General, as the Government's commitment to rebalancing power between the executive, legislature, and the people will necessitate reform of this office. As both a politician and an independent legal adviser, the Attorney General's roles in enhancing the administration of justice, the maintenance of the rule of the law and the protection of the public interest have the potential to create tension with each other. The consultation on the role of the Attorney General will consider suggestions set out in the Report of the Commons Constitutional Affairs Select Committee 'Constitutional Role of the Attorney General (HC 306)' (ISBN 0215035461, available below) along with other options for reform. |
