Synopsis: |
Broadly divided into issues concerned with air, land and water pollution this paper reviews the work of the Environment Committee between 1983 and 1992 and examines the impact their inquiries have given and their role as watchdog over the Department of the Environment. The reviews are presented in chronological order. Inquiries were concentrated on subjects that fulfilled certain criteria which were to avoid subjects on which parties had a firm political line or were likely to be fully debated in the House and to choose subjects that were receiving little Departmental action. This led to reports with an emphasis on "green" issues. |
