Synopsis: |
Pressure to improve environmental standards is often countered by claims that controls would damage trade. Therefore the Environment Committee decided to try and get behind the theories and anecdotes and discover what is the real World experience. Their enquiry hinged around three questions: how far the objectives of the new World Trade Organization are compatible with the sustainability objective set out in the Rio Summit; whether setting high environmental standards would harm or help industry; and if strict environmental controls in the developed world might make third-world countries more vulnerable to pollution. In pursuing their enquiry written evidence was received from over 50 organizaions, oral evidence was taken from 17 witnesses and several visits were made around the world. Their final report to government bring together many diverse views from which a series of recommendations is put forward. |
