Description: |
This volume brings together essays on the relations between fiction and the economy, all established or emergent scholars from different fields of expertise. The essays range widely in their respective foci, extending beyond purely literary studies to encompass history, the history of language, studies in the visual arts, and philosophy. |
Synopsis: |
The essays in this volume seek to participate in the current, and growing, debate concerning the intersections of fictional and economic discourses. They offer a productive complement to approaches that consider the study of the economy to be fundamental to literary studies, by emphasising how literary thought can throw light on the extent to which the economy is itself a fiction. All contributors come from the field of literary studies, and all show an awareness of the rhetorical and narrative articulations of the economy, addressing the fictional basis of the economy as we know it, and the manner in which meaning is articulated according (but also counter) to the principles at work in these economic fictions. The discussion developed throughout the collection, however, extends beyond literary texts to films, philosophical works and historical and legal discourses, all of which are shown to be permeated by the imaginary make-up of the economy. |
