Explorations in Sociology. British Sociological Association Conference |
Synopsis: |
This book brings together research about a diverse range of groups who are rarely analysed together: Welsh, Irish, Jewish, Arab, White, African and Indian. The aim of the book is to critique orthodox understandings of the production of these identities, drawing upon the best of 'old' and 'new' theory. It highlights a shift away from a black-white dualistic model which has been the dominant race-relations explanation in Britain. Key contemporary issues are explored. These include the underplaying of anti-Semitism and anti-Arab racism in dominant race-relations models; the relationship of Irish, Welsh, Scottish and other social categories to 'Britishness'; the loss and dislocation of identity but also the potential for reformulating identities between different social divisions with particular reference to gender, class and sexuality; the critical examination of differences within racialized social groups; and an exploration of ethnic majorities, including questions of whiteness. |
