Description: Focuses on the important middle years of the Mandate, the political and legal order which Britain had established in Palestine, and the foundation of the Palestinian problem today. Britain struggled to find the balance between Arab and Jewish demands in the face of increased Jewish immigration.
Synopsis: The political and legal order which Britain had established in Palestine during the 1920s was severely shaken by the rioting of August 1929 and was challenged again, in the autumn of 1933, by the Palestinian Arab national movement. The problem for Britain was to find the balance between Arab and Jewish demands, especially as Nazi pressures on European Jews created mass migration. Arab fears leaped as Jewish immigration increased. But the Jewish community was able to consolidate and to enlarge its defensive capabilities by the time order collapsed in 1936 under the force of the Arab rebellion. The middle years of the Mandate proved to be crucial for the survival of the Jewish National Home. The period was also highly significant for the development of the Palestinian Arab nationalist movement, and for the shaping of British policy in response to the emerging international issues which threatened its hegemony in the Middle East. By the author of "Continuity and Change in European Society", "Social Change in France", "Social and Political Movements in Western Europe" and "Divided Loyalties".
