Synopsis: |
This work describes the origins and development of the unique military system by which Prussia vaulted to a great power status in the 18th century and to the leadership of a unified Germany in the 19th century. Embracing all military recruitment, finance and supply, that system merged with and absorbed the social system of Prussia generally. In particular, by fostering a close identification between noble status and army officership it not only perpetuated a military-aristocratic governmental system, but also produced habits of command and obedience in Prusso-German society still fatefully apparent in the first half of the 20th century. |
