Synopsis: This "Concordance" to the poems and plays of Robert Browning is available in seven sturdy buckram volumes, printed on acid-free paper designed to last for decades. This handsome scholarly tool is keyed to the widely-used and editorially-reliable texts and variants found in "Robert Browning: The Poems", edited by T.J. Collins and John Pettigrew, 2 vols (1981: Penguin and Yale), "Robert Browning: The Ring and the Book", edited by Richard Altick, (1971: Penguin; 1981: Yale), and "The Plays of Robert Browning", edited by T.J. Collins and R.J. Shroyer (Garland, 1988). Unlike the "Poems" and "Plays", which use the corrected version of the collected edition of 1888-89 as copytext, "The Ring and the Book" is based on the first edition of 1868-69. The addition in the concordance of the 1888-89 variants to Altick's text and of editorially-significant variants to the "Poems" and "Plays" permits consistency across texts. With some exceptions (such as the musical notation in "Parleyings", "Poems", "II", 850) the concordance reproduces the typography of these editions and includes textual variants to copy-text lines rather than indexing variant lines separately, different readings are available at a glance. Reference codes include information (volume, page, title, part such as act and scene, line) that will allow users to consult the Ohio and Oxford Browning editions, still in progress. Appendixes contain complete lists of headwords and their frequencies and statistical information about the nearly one-million words of the Browning corpus.
