Synopsis: |
This special volume marks the 75th anniversary of the Courtauld Institute, which accepted students for the first time in 1932-33. Its association with the Warburg Institute goes back almost to that time. Among those who were instrumental in bringing the Warburg to England at the end of 1933 were W. G. Constable, the first Director of the Courtauld, and Lord Lee of Fareham, one of its founders. Lee and Samuel Courtauld continued to support the Warburg until its incorporation in the University of London in 1944, and encouraged links between the two institutes, with members of the Warburg staff giving lectures at the Courtauld already in the 1930s. In 1939, the Journal of the Warburg Institute, which had begun publication two years earlier, became the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes. When the Warburg joined the University, the plan was for the two institutes to share a building, working closely together but with each retaining its autonomy, although in the event the Courtauld found a home at Samuel Courtauld's house in Portman Square. The staff of the Warburg Institute is happy to have this opportunity of recording our gratitude to the Courtauld Institute and of celebrating our long and productive collaboration. |
