Synopsis: |
The purpose of this book is to discuss the properties of non-metallic elements dissolved as a small amount of impurities in liquid metals and alloys in terms of statistical thermodynamics and quantum mechanics on the basis of modern structural models. The behaviour of non-metallic elements in liquid metals is one of the most important problems in metallurgical physical chemistry since it plays a central role in the process of manufacturing metallic substances. Experimental studies on this problem have been developed extensively, thanks to the efforts of many researchers, in spite of difficulties associated with high-temperature measurements. Theoretically, solutions of non-metals dissolved in liquid metals are very interesting because of distinctive differences of bonding between metals and non-metals. A deeper understanding of metal-non-metal solution systems can be obtained by making theoretical discussions on these phenomenological treatments from the point of view of quantum mechanics and statistical thermodynamics. The book describes such theoretical results obtained recently, with expectations of future developments which would be made jointly by metallurgists, chemists and physicists. |
