Description: This collection of 14 essays examines selected issues in the 1000 years of Ukranian economic history prior to World War I. Topics covered include: population change; industrialization; urbanization; and the developments of the Southern and Western (within the Austrian-Hungarian Empire) regions.
Synopsis: This volume - containing 14 previously unpublished essays - is devoted to exploring the 1000 years of Ukranian economic history prior to the outbreak of World War I. The contributions are divided chronologically into three parts covering Kievan Rus, the 16th and 17th centuries, and the 19th century. They are not intended to give a comprehensive survey of Ukrainian economic history, but to deal with important economic issues of particular periods. In the first part, the problem of the orientation of the Kievan Principality to the Nomadic East or the Byzantine South is discussed. The authors of the volume's second part analyze the Ukraine's economic ties during the rise and fall of Cossackdom and, subsequently, the Hetman State to the West and Muscovy. The contributions of the third part deal with the important problems of economic development during the Ukraine's rebirth as a modern nation. Issues discussed include population change, industrialization, relations with the empire's metropolis, urbanization and the developments of the Southern and Western (within the Austrian-Hungarian Empire) regions. An introductory essay offers a proposal for a periodization scheme of Ukranian economic history. The authors are leading specialists on Ukranian history from the United States, Canada and the Ukraine.
