Description: |
This text presents a study of the coinage of the Artebates and Regni, Celtic tribes based in central southern England, from the 1st century BC to the Claudian invasion. |
Synopsis: |
The pre-Roman coinage of Britan has long commanded the interest of antiquarians, archaeologists and historians, but has never received the kind of attention accorded to Classical or Mediaeval coinages. This is the first exhaustive study of the coinage of the Atrebates and Regni, Celtic tribes based in central southern England, from the 1st century BC to the Claudian invasion. It also includes a series of coins principally known from Kent, struck in the names of Tincomaros, Eppillus and Verica. The coins come from a variety of sources - the Oxford Index, national and local museums, private collections, metal detectorists, dealers' catalogues and stock. Detailed analysis of the coins makes the identification of a number of mints possible. Size, metallurgical composition and weight are scientifically assessed, and Bean is able to draw some broad historical conclusions on dynastic structure and geographical spheres of influence. |
