Synopsis: |
This volume provides a concise account of Diocletian's Palace at Split. This volume - based on the second Ian Sanders Memorial Lecture in Sheffield in 1982 and originally published in 1986 - here appears in a corrected reprint, with additional illustrations. The villa built on the Dalmatian coast as a residence for the emperor Diocletian following his retirement in AD 305 has long remained a point of reference in Roman art and architecture for the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Professor Wilkes offers a detailed account of the surviving remains of Diocletian's Palace at Split and of its exploration in modern times beginning with Robert Adam in the 18th century and still continuing today. There is also an account of the continuing debate regarding the architectural origins and true purpose of a building which was a major source of inspiration in the European classical revival of the 18th and early 19th centuries. |
