Synopsis: |
A reference guide to The Human Rights Act 1998 and the law of the European Convention on Human Rights. The book is aimed at those who do not have any formal legal education but who want to or need to know about the subject. It carefully explains the legal implications of the Act and the Convention and then goes on to consider the wider and perhaps more important socio-political implications. It also explains that protecting human rights is less a subject of the law and more a matter of conscience and that personal and professional values and beliefs are important to any kind of recognition of human rights. The text is presented in bullet-point form and interspersed with a series of reference boxes to explain the relevant legal issues of UK, Convention and other international laws. The Convention Rights are explained by groupings the Articles into chapters dealing with: the well-being of people (articles 2,3,4,8 and 12); liberty and judicial oversight of hearings and punishment (articles 5, 6 and 7); and the basic freedoms of a democratic society (articles 9,10 and 11). Due to size and weight there will be an additional charge of #5 for package and postage. |
