Synopsis: |
Alone on the first day of January 1983 in a snow covered Bavaria, a US army general, Gregory Keech, dresses in full military uniform and drives out of Camp Braddock to a border crossing with the East and proceeds to cross over. His action causes a furore back home. Washington, believing he was abducted, demands his release. The Security Services in London are called in to assist in the American's rescue. As London prepares, the presence of a mole in its department is felt. This stab of treachery is followed by an elaborate sweep of deceit to uncover their man. With the US pressing London, all its operatives are affected by the ensuing panic. Years later, alone in a northern US state, the army general's son has fallen along with the family name. Growing up with family disgrace he folds under the weight. Alone and under distress he recalls back to a time when his world was secure only to keep falling in his search for that world again. Across an ocean a girl, badly torn by the security turmoil which broke her home, has been wandering through her life. From childhood she has suffered the mysterious disappearance of her father that seemed never to be resolved. Now an opportunity has appeared; with much hope and energy she begins a last attempt to uncover his hiding place. In 1999 the children, in their mid-twenties, find a door to each other's lives; they meet and bond in America. An old news story is gradually awakened and a security rush is on to bury it. |
