Synopsis: |
This is a rewritten version of a novel from the early 1800s that sheds light on the early history of Michigan and Ontario.Heather Kirk's "Wacousta" is a readable version of the classic novel by John Richardson about the Pontiac Uprising of 1763, especially the attacks on Fort Michilimackinac and Fort Detroit. Kirk, a scholar and novelist, spent a year rewriting Wacousta, from a reliable facsimile of the first edition, eliminating what modern readers might consider dull, abstract verbiage in the original but retaining the exciting plot and authentic details. Kirk's version of "Wacousta" is half the length of Richardson's, but no important scenes have been lost. The original "Wacousta" was and is a literary treasure that magnificently captures North America's distant past. The novel illuminates the French-British and Aboriginal-European conflicts and its heroes are young men and women on both sides of the conflicts. Its portraits of the Amerindian rebels, the French community at Detroit, and the occupying British army are brilliant.'Judged against Walter Scott's historical romances or James Fenimore Cooper's frontier romances, "Wacousta" is wondrously complex and enigmatic,' wrote John Moss in his "Reader's Guide to the Canadian Novel". Kirk's new version of Wacousta will make the novel widely accessible to modern readers by translating Richardson's prose into more modern language.Kirk's "Wacousta" is not only a great read but also a balanced account of the Pontiac Uprising. Anyone interested in the history of Michigan and Ontario will enjoy this unique window into the past. |
