Remembering the Modern World |
Synopsis: |
Remembering Women's Activism looks at memories of women's political activism, with an analytical lens which draws on recent theorisations of gender and memory. The book examines the intersections between gender politics and acts of remembrance through a series of case studies of major figures and events which have inspired significant acts of remembrance. The focus of the volume is on themes such as leadership, protest, war service and peace activism through a lens of gender and memory and the authors investigate how each these forms of remembering intersected with changing configurations of gender at the time of remembering. Over five chapters the authors take specific examples of activist women to look at how they were and are remembered by society: * The Suffragettes * Women as Workers * Women and War and Women Pacifists * Anti-Colonial Nationalism * Women's Liberation movements. The book is transnational in scope and the acts of remembering are both state-centred and organic including songs (of celebration and protest), parades, film (fictional and documentary), monuments, exhibitions and museums, and, awards and prizes. An ideal volume for all students of women's history and of the relationship between memory and history. |
