Gloria Steinem noted that writing is the only thing she does, that when she does it, she never feels like she should be doing something else. For David that constant factor seems to be writing poetry-a drive for the most part unconscious, that possessed him throughout his life-and which literally made it impossible for him to take anything but his own work too seriously. Whereas some people take a lifetime to develop their craft, David has put a lifetime into developing a few poems, revising, reshaping and revisiting them again and again, until they no longer have any connection to nor resemble their roots except in the most rudimentary way.
