The challenges faced by twenty-first-century businesses and governments are characterized as being fundamentally different in nature, scope and level of impact from those of the past. Based on a cross-disciplinary conceptualization of wisdom, Intezari and Pauleen demystify the abstract and practical differentiation between data-, information-, knowledge-, and wisdom-based decision making and provide an integral and practical framework for incorporating wisdom into business and management practices in both the private and public sectors. While information technology and systems (IT and IS) can enable a decision maker to obtain access to and handle great volumes of information, the information and technology systems cannot replace the human qualities and abilities that are essential in the decision-making and strategy formulation process. Qualities include experience, awareness, intuition, deliberation and judgement. The limitations of merely using data, information, and knowledge in making holistic and prudent decisions and formulating strategies in dealing with the plethora of socio-economically wicked problems faced in our current turbulent business world are challenged and the authors criticize the unrealistic view of technology as the answer to all problems, thus providing an optimistic view and an extended understanding of the role of IT and IS when accompanied by wisdom-informed insight.
