Synopsis: |
In the late 19th century, one man caused more long-term economic destruction to the economy of the United States than any terrorist before, or since. He was hunted to the ends of the Earth by the US and Britain, brought both countries to the brink of war with one another and was charged under the first international tribunal for war crimes. His name was James Waddell, and he was the Sea King. James Waddell left the US Navy in 1861, joining the Confederate Navy after being refused his pay by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Swearing vengeance, Waddell became the commander of the CSS Shenandoah, the last Confederate commerce raider. In her 58,000 mile voyage around the world, Waddell and the Shenandoah became a 'weapon of maritime destruction' that destroyed the US whaling fleet, causing economic chaos to the US while sending global shipping insurance rates sky-high. When Waddell discovered the Civil War had ended 4 months earlier while cruising in the Bering Sea, and that he had been declared a pirate and enemy of the state, he sailed 22,000 miles non-stop, and out of sight of land, to surrender in Liverpool, England, to the British Crown.Proclaimed an American hero upon his death in 1886 he was given the only state funeral ever awarded for a former Confederate officer. In 1964, the US Navy named a destroyer the USS James Waddell in his honour, thus granting him final redemption. "The Sea King" is the first biography of the extraordinary life of James Waddell and uses documents never before revealed to the general public from the US Navy, the National Archives of the United States of America and the British Home Office. |
