Description: |
A reconstruction of 'The Northern Recension' of The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. |
Synopsis: |
'The Northern Recension' of "The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" was a revision, augmentation, and continuation of the original Chronicle (written in Greater Wessex in 892). It does not survive in pristine form and has to be reconstructed from three witnesses of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Recension was composed at York, with a self-consciously Northumbrian outlook but in a standard (West-Saxon) form of Old English. Its author(s) drew also on a Northumbrian chronicle to A.D. 806 and added matter relating to tenth-century Northumbrian history; the last annal which 'The Northern Recension' can be shown to have contained is that for 984, and it seems certain that it was composed around the millennium. Professor Dumville's edition of this Old-English text, accompanied by a facing translation into modern English, is the first attempt to reconstruct "The Northern Recension": as such it will be of interest to historians, literary scholars, and textual critics. David N. Dumville is Professor in History, Palaeography & Celtic at the University of Aberdeen and a Life Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge. |
