Synopsis: |
Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was the principal English actor of his times, and the first ever actor to receive a knighthood. His interpretation of Shakesperean roles, in particular Hamlet, brought him to public attention as a tragedian of real power and originality. His later association with the actress Ellen Terry further established his great reputation. The Drama Addresses includes four lectures delivered to university audiences between 1881 and 1891. They are entitled: The Stage As It Is; The Art of Acting (1), Four Great Actors; and The Art of Acting (2). In each address the author reveals his depth of understanding of his profession and his acute perception of hte skills of his fellow professionals. First published in 1893, the work is of great historical value, particularly for those studying the history of English theatre. |
