Synopsis: |
Remember Jose Inga! is a novel based in South America in the turbulent decade of the 1970s. It was, paradoxically, a time of hope and a time of despair. A time of hope because, in the wake of the Medellin Conference, a church that had traditionally sided with the powerful, was now taking its stand with the little ones. A time of despair, because brutal military dictatorships reacted violently to the new alliance. The dictatorships were supported by oligarchies at home and neo-colonial powers from abroad. This oppression from abroad has reached crisis point at present, but it was already going on, if not quite so blatantly, in decades past. This moving story follows the fortunes of ordinary folk (Indians, priests, Campesinos) trapped in the web of history. A small decision in the life of the indigenous Jose Inga leads to consequences that are great and impacted the lives of many in ways he could not have dreamt of. |
