Synopsis: "A Dance Class Anthology" is an important contribution to the field of dance accompaniment. In it, there is a selection of model musical solutions to the challenges presented by ballet classes, each piece selected not just because it will work for an exercise, but also because it fulfils one or more of the following criteria: it is a well-known extract from a ballet which is typical for the genre, but unusual outside it; it is a representative sample of a dance rhythm that is useful and common in dance classes, but not well-known outside them; it is a piece commonly played by dance accompanists for particular exercises; and it has some unusual musical characteristic which may be a lifesaver for particular occasions. Every selection is annotated with an explanation of why the music was chosen, what it might be suitable for, details of title, subtitle, composer and, where applicable, the rhythmic type it belongs to. All of these, together with the music itself, should help the inquisitive pianist to find a wealth of similar and related material from which to develop a personalised repertoire, and provide models for improvisation.
