Synopsis: |
Nancy Orr Ramer's memoir, "Anywhere but India", opens with her childhood in Scotland and America, the tragic death of her mother, and the break-up of her home during the Great Depression. On her own at 17, she studies at "Sick Kids" hospital, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and Bellshill, becoming a nurse and midwife. Declining the proffered escape to America during World War II, she remains in Scotland nursing shell-shocked soldiers and victims of the Clydeside Blitz. As a Ranyard nurse in London's slums, Nancy is torn between her love of public health nursing, the dashing young men she meets and her call to the mission field. Appointed in 1948 by the Church of Scotland to India where the wounds of British rule are still raw, Nancy defiantly declared she'll go "Anywhere but India". Reluctantly, she agrees to serve at a Pune hospital, only to fall in love with an American engineer. Together, Nancy and Bob raise four children in a land where your toddler can grab a scorpion, the water buffalo run faster than your truck and a lizard in a curry pot can cause a riot. |
