Description: A vivid chronicle of Italy's rich history? from WWII to present? these narrative poems sing of a country's vibrant and resilient people.
Synopsis: This is the first US publication of a well-known and respected contemporary Italian poet. Tarozzi's previous works in Italian have had wonderful reception and critical attention from Italian media, specifically literary critics and philosophers in Bologna.Tarozzi is a unique figure in contemporary Italian poetry. While her early writing is aligned with a simpler, lyrical tradition in Italian poetry, her resources have developed and broadened by her decades-long work writing on and translating American poetry-Lowell, Bishop, and Merrill, among others-during her time as a Professor of English and American literature at the University of Verona. Her American influences allow for more substantial discursive and narrative elements, and a lighter, more humorous tone in her poetry. The translators have provided a generous selection of both long and short poems spanning three decades, and an introduction providing both literary and personal context. Jeanne Foster and Alan Williamson are both poets of distinction in their own right. Foster's most recent book is Goodbye Silver Sister (Northwestern University Press, 2015); Williamson's is The Pattern More Complicated: New and Selected Poems (University of Chicago Press, 2004). This is a bilingual edition, with the original Italian poems facing the English translations in a beautiful and powerful presentation.
