Synopsis: |
This is a study of circular processions ("lustrationes") around estate or field, army or assembled citizens ("lustrum"), as they were common in Roman antiquity and are still practised today in some areas of Germany as a procession around a field. The ritual pattern is examined from the human-ethological perspectve. The concept of ritual as a repeatable act is central in this regard. In the first part of the book, the "repetition" in the science of religion is given a new basis by means of an ethological understading of ritual. On this anthropological basis the author analyzes in the second part (proceeding from Cato's instructions on ritual in his textbook on agriculture) various Roman "lustrationes" as variations of a ritual pattern, the centre of which consists of circular processions with sacrificial animals. In so doing she arrives at a new view of the co-called "Ambarvalia" as well as related processional rites, and she contributes to the understanding of the religious aspects of the Zensor Lustrum. |
