In Produktionsunternehmen kommt der Produktionsstrategie eine zunehmende Bedeutung zu. Neben der Kostenstruktur und der Produktqualitat wird sich "Zeit" zu einem immer entscheidenderen Wettbewerbsfaktor entwickeln. Flexibilitat, Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit und Verkurzung der Produktdurchlaufzeit von der Produktidee bis zum lieferbaren Produkt werden zunehmend uber Erfolg oder Misserfolg eines Unternehmens entscheiden. Es mussen also Produktions- und Organisationsstrukturen geschaffen werden, in denen kurze Planungs- und Ausfuhrungszeiten realisiert werden konnen. Da jedoch gleichzeitig die Prozesse und Ablaufe in der Fabrik immer komplexer werden, mussen die Menschen durch bessere Hilfsmittel unterstutzt werden. Diese neuen Hilfsmittel sollen die Mitarbeiter von Routinearbeiten entlasten, die abteilungsubergreifende Zusammenarbeit verbessern und ihre Motivation durch neue Arbeitsmethoden und -strukturen erhohen.
