He studied economics, sociology and philosophy at the Free University Berlin andKassel University. He was a lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin, the Berlin College of Economics, Kassel University and at the University of Frankfurt. He is Spiritus Rector of the postgraduate European Urban Studies at the Bauhaus University Weimar and director of the EuroConferences Series The European City in Transition at Weimar 2001-2003.
