Synopsis: |
Featuring nine expert review articles, this volume presents an overview of the current state of knowledge on the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, from basic biology to clinical application. The CEA and also the closely-related non-specific cross-reacting antigen were discovered by Sabine von Kleist. Based on a symposium held on her 60th birthday, this issue includes contributions on the molecular biology of CEA gene family members and their role in the staging and follow-up of cancer patients, while also providing some historical perspectives. The use of CEA as a target molecule for tumour immunolocalization and its potential for developing new forms of both passive and active immunotherapy hold great promise for future clinical application and show how important this field of research is. |
