Synopsis: As a painter I use a realist technique, but the emblems I invent are not real. They are purely imaginative...Painting is a thing of the mind. My realism is not nature, or landscape, or still life, but the psychological world. At the time of his death in 2006, Agustin Fernandez ranked among Cuba's most outstanding and inimitable artists. Defying simple categorisation, today his work is most recognisable for its ambiguous and precariously balanced forms, erotic overtones, surreal juxtapositions and metallic palette. Fernandez' work has been extensively exhibited throughout Europe, the United States and Latin America, participating, in the course of his career, in over 100 group shows, exhibiting with artists such as Victor Brauner, Hans Bellmer, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Gego, Wifredo Lam, Robert Mapplethorpe, Roberto Matta, Carlos Merida, Francis Picabia and Yves Tanguy. Fernandez' art is represented in almost 30 museums worldwide, with 11 works currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Fernandez also found a popular audience when one of his large paintings was featured in the 1980 Brian de Palma film, Dressed to Kill.
