Series 1 and 2 collection of the Lampoon's spoof reality television shows that American TV executives were too nervous to green-light. Years before the advent of reality TV and situationist scamps like Jackass, The Lampoon team were blatantly encouraging members of the public to engage in ridiculous staged scenes like midget wars and eating from skips. Although the show was never aired, several dozen pilots were made and these are collected here in a two-disc set. Outrageously near-the knuckle skits include 'Caught Stealing', 'American Porn Star', 'Dumpster Dinners'and 'Beer Goggles'. The whole lot is overseen by host Ari 'The Amazing Racist' Shaffir. Ari's specialities include approaching black people dressed in a Klan outfit or distributing anti-Muslim paraphernalia outside mosques. Other segments feature the crew baiting people with hard cash to see how much it'll take for them to perform particularly disgusting acts on camera. Frighteningly little, as it turns out. Easy to see why Lost Reality never hit primetime as you watch people being financially coerced into criminal activities such as prostitution and thievery... |
