Description: |
Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien's lyrical re-working of Albert Lamorisse's Oscar-winning short film about a boy who finds a red balloon which becomes his companion. Extending the original film's plotline, seven-year-old Simon (Simon Iteanu) lives with his separated mother Suzanne (Juliet Binoche), a puppeteer, in a small flat in Paris. Struggling to keep her head above water with her busy life, Suzanne decides to hire Chinese film student, Song (Song Fan), as a babysitter for Simon. As Simon and Song spend an increasing amount of time together, they become dependent on one another, though remaining engrossed and absorbed in their own dreams, while the mysterious red balloon follows them through the streets of Paris. |
