Description: |
Part of the American Film Theatre series produced by Ely Landau. Daniel Mann directs this big-screen adaptation of the musical play by Maxwell Anderson and Kurt Weill. Brock Peters stars as South African minister Stephen Kumalo, who is searching the gritty streets of Johannesburg for his missing son, Absalom (Clifton Davis). To his horror, he eventually finds him imprisoned and awaiting trial on a charge of capital murder. The ensuing trial severely tests Kumalo's faith, as Absalom faces a racist trial. In the process, Absalom marries his pregnant girlfriend, Irina (Melba Moore), while Kumalo forges an unlikely - and ultimately doomed - friendship with a white farmer, James Jarvis (Paul Rogers). |
