Description:

Milos Forman's lavish adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's panoramic novel of American life in the early years of the 20th century. Mixing fact and fiction, the drama unfolds on a number of different fronts: a millionaire kills a celebrated architect in a dispute over the millionaire's showgirl wife; a black ragtime pianist is pushed to the limit when his car is destroyed by a racist fire chief; a middle-class family gradually comes apart at the seams; and an immigrant artist struggles to build a new life for himself in the New World. The film cost $32 million and was the result of a production process which saw at least one director - Robert Altman - fall by the way side; it also features Jimmy Cagney's return to the screen after a 20 year hiatus.
