Description: |
Deeply moving and personal documentary from French actress-turned-director Sandrine Bonnaire, that forms an intimate portrait of her autistic younger sister, Sabine, and the trials she's endured at the hands of France's modern healthcare system. Recording her sister's life over a period of 25 years, the resulting home-movies show a vibrant Sabine bursting with life, smiling and dancing for the camera. Always close to her other sisters, when the time came for them to eventually leave home, Sabine took out her frustration on her mother, eventually leading to a five-year spell in a psychiatric hospital which changed her life forever. From the happy smiling person just a few years before, Sabine, still undiagnosed and under heavy medication, turned into a drooling, insecure shadow of her former self. Happily, Sabine is on the road to recovery due to the love and support of her family, but the film highlights the plight of those affected by the condition, who all too often fail to receive adequate support from their own healthcare system. |
