Description: |
Box set containing six classic Marx Brothers films. In 'A Night at the Opera', Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) is an irreverent shyster attempting to persuade the wealthy Mrs Claypool (Margaret Dumont) to invest in an opera company who are putting on a production of 'La Traviata'. His dealings are thwarted by the attempts of stagehands Fiorelli (Chico Marx) and Tomasso (Harpo Marx) to advance the careers of two young singers in the company (Allan Jones and Kitty Carlisle). 'A Day at the Races' sees sanitarium owner Judy (Maureen O'Sullivan) employing Dr Hugo Z. Hackenbush (Groucho), a favourite of wealthy patient Mrs Upjohn (Dumont), in an attempt to save her business. Unfortunately, Hackenbush is in fact a horse doctor, but help is at hand in the form of sanitarium chauffeur Tony (Chico) and his jockey friend Stuffy (Harpo), who attempt to revive Judy's flagging fortunes by winning the local Derby. The comic mayhem continues in 'At the Circus', when shyster lawyer J. Cheever Loophole (Groucho) sweeps to the rescue after bungling circus attendants Pirelli (Chico) and Punchy (Harpo) warn him of a plot by a devious loan shark to swindle their kindly employers. The inept trio soon find themselves up against the circus strongman and beautiful but devious starlet Peerless Pauline (Eve Arden), fitting in songs such as 'Lydia the Tattooed Lady' along the way. 'Go West' sees the zany trio galavanting in the Wild West, while in 'The Big Store' Groucho plays a detective investigating the running of a department store and saving the place from thieves at the same time. |
