A woman finds that money can't buy everything, in this understated drama from Chinese director Fei Xie. Xiang (Gaowa Siqin) is a self-made businesswoman running a sesame oil factory in rural China. When some Japanese investors appear on the scene, she decides it's time to raise her profile in the community by using the new found funds to try to buy the hand of a local girl for her epileptic and simple-minded son. But when the girl's parents decline her offer of cash, Xiang is left to contemplate the similarities between her prospective daughter-in-law's life, and her own, as a 13-year-old bride sold into marriage. |
