Synopsis: |
This text focuses exclusively on contemporary American ideologies and their implications for US politics, elections and government. It is suitable for courses in US political ideologies, introductory American government, advanced American politics, or introduction to political science. It examines the long-established basic values, and develops the traditional left-right political spectrum comprising special American versions of liberalism, conservatism, populism, libertarianism, and so on. Indeed, in the second edition the chapters have been reorganized to show left-right ideological relationships. It then analyzes several new ideologies or organized movements, such as the Christian right, feminism, the Rainbow Coalition, the Greens, New Options, and environmentalism generally - in order to see how the combination of the eclipse of liberalism and the rise of new ideologies are reshaping the American political scene. By addressing the present and immediate future, students are able to see where the US political system is heading.Authors and thinkers representing each ideology are quoted frequently, allowing students to reach their own judgements without intervention by the authors. The chapter on reform has been totally rewritten to expand gender and multiculturalism (ch.6) and the completely rewritten chapter on working class ideas eliminates New Left theories and emphasizes current thinking (ch.7). |
